How To: Pumpkin Lanterns

Happy Halloween Lovelies!

Here in the UK we don't tend to celebrate Halloween to the extent other countries do. It's not generally custom to go all out & decorate our homes in all kinds of Halloween ghoulishness.

I fell in love with a more subtle way to partake in the spirit of Halloween when I saw these gorgeous Pumpkin Lanterns on Pinterest that are created by drilling into the Pumpkin - I thought, surely I can do that!
So, I asked Ian to show me how to use his drill - you should have seen the look of fear on his face!

Here's what I did...

get your pumpkins in various sizes & cut off the tops

scoop out the seeds & flesh - reserve the flesh to make a soup or roast

armed with your drill (don't let the power go to your head!!) decide on your designs - you'll need different sized drill bits for the different sized holes

drill the holes into your pumpkin according to your design, keeping your fingers out of the way!

don't dispose of the pumpkin curls...they make a pretty garnish on dishes, or pumpkin crisps if roasted in the oven

hold your pumpkin up to the light to check the design is coming together. I chose little flowers...

a zig zag design....

...& different sized circles in uniform rows as my designs

now you're ready to pop a tea light inside each one...

...and enjoy!

I love them so much I think there will be annual pumpkin drilling chez intotheblonde.
