Trend: SS14 Sunglasses

Monday, 10 February 2014

Happy Monday Lovelies!

I'm back from Dubai all refreshed & sun kissed - did you miss me? Aaaaah, I missed you too!!

Before I went away to Dubai, I wanted to know which sunglasses trends were going to be key for SS14. Those of you who have followed my blog for a while will know that I have been lucky enough to collaborate with Sunglasses Shop since my blog began, so who better to talk us through what's hot in the world of sunglasses for SS14 than their Fashion Editor -

Art School

Art was a huge influence on the collections. At Chanel the Grand Palais was turned
into a gallery. Chanel’s art students were paint swatch clad, backpacked and carrying
portfolios. There were bold brushstrokes and DIY accessories at Celine. Versace’s street
inspired collection was dashed with technicolour graffiti.
Dior’s Lady Lady 1 just so happens to come dressed with colour flecked temples. The
geometric lines of the iconic Cannage pattern are the perfect contrast to painterly

Burberry provided the ultimate pastel palette for 2014 with dusky old school shades.
Colour block yours and be sure to top off with a fitting sunglass. The latest take on
the Ray-Ban Aviator; the Full Colour comes clad in strong pastel acetate. This mint
colourway stands out; it’s unusual and easy to wear too. The shape keeps your pastel
pieces from coming off too saccharine.

Poster paint primaries were big news at Celine, Acne, Dior, Chanel and Alexander
McQueen. If you’ve not tried them, do. It feels so fresh, so modern. The Sheriff and
Cherry G008 aviator is the season’s most glorious expression of the trend in sunglass
form. Mismatched colour blocked pieces are finished off by asymmetrical arms and

Sports Luxe

Sports luxe looks abounded in the collections. This time around there was a retro feel
to it. Thick striped ribbing appeared on bombers at Marc Jacobs, Marni and Lacoste. It
was also made full use of at Prada and Celine. Primaries made for bright team colour.
Sporty honeycomb mesh effects added texture at DKNY and Alexander Wang.
The Victoria Beckham Trigger Navigator is nothing short of a key piece this season. Its
metal lines are the perfect accompaniment to straps and stripes of the season’s sporting
looks. And handcrafted in the Cutler and Gross factory in Italy your luxe is well and truly
taken care of.

Pink is the biggest colour trend for the season carrying over from winter. In lace
at Burberry, in delicate knits, pleats and origami tops at Dior, in tweed at Chanel.
Sunglasses are the perfect signature to adopt. It’s soft, flattering and fun. The Ray-
Ban Ice Pop Wayfarer is the perfect pink frame. Its iconic angular handcrafted shape in
crystal sheer colour toughens up the look. Matching lenses make for a catwalk finish.

The runway message was don’t hold back when it comes to accessories for the new
season. And sunglasses especially. Experiment with colour, shape and size. There were
crystal tipped mirrored cats at Fendi, sixties style flat topped rounds in colour pop brights
at Stella and Missoni. At Chanel there was a sporty twist with peaked brows.
Chanel’s take on the bow icon is at its boldest yet. In luxe leather this is a style that
speaks volumes loudly.

More Monochrome

Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Celine, Chanel, DKNY, Erdem, Victoria Beckham and
more returned with monochrome looks for spring/summer. Accessories especially
sunglasses are still the most original way to work it. And none more so than Karl for Italia
Independent’s bevelled velvet faced frame. The velvet’s washable too, naturally.

Mirror Mirror

In the time honored exchange between catwalk and street, the mirrored lens was
liberated from serious sports to fashion. With fashion houses like Dior, Chanel and
Celine bringing them to the runway it’s time to take note if you’ve not already done so.
Cult Croatian brand Sheriff and Cherry give you the perfect paired down wayfarer. Catty
upswept corners flatter. Dip dyed temple tips set you apart.

Daytime Dazzle

Sporty pieces took on embellishment at Prada and Gucci bringing couture bling to
daytime pieces. And comfort to evening looks. Miu Miu brought on the dazzle too. Here
inspired by its jewellery line the iconic 10NS frame is updated with hand applied crystals.
Antiquated metal adds to the vintage feel of this beautiful frame.

Flat Tops

3.1 Phillip Lim and Celine topped off looks with sporty flat top shades. Just like a great
silhouette in your clothes, sunglasses should add something to your overall look. Enter
the flat top. Celine’s ZZ Top is still unmatched for its wearability and impact. Thick
handcrafted acetate and glare busting polarised lenses seal the deal.

A huge thank you to Cassandra for such a fabulous round up of SS14 sunglasses, I love how she related the sunglasses to the overall catwalk trends. This is a great article to bookmark & keep referring back to - I know I will!

Which sunglasses trend are you favouring for SS14?
